Quotes from Candice

  • “I think a lot of politicians now think that they can just go directly to the audience, and you see that so much.”

Candice Holdsworth and fellow panellists discuss Trump TV's launch and implications for journalism. Candice argues that while politicians increasingly communicate directly to audiences, traditional adversarial journalism cannot be replaced as it is fundamental to Western democratic discourse.

is in this town to tell them all, calm down. Look for a resolution. Look for some sort of off ramp here. We need peace between Russia and Ukraine, not World War III. So we need to wish him luck with that.

All right, Bev, have fun. Looking forward to tomorrow. Take care of yourself and speak soon. Thank you, Bev Turner. Right, let's get the thoughts of my panel. Political strategist, Thomas Corbett-Dillon.

Reporter at Reason Magazine, Reem Ibrahim. Got there that time. And in Washington, sorry, in London, former councillor, Labour councillor, Sebastian Salek, and journalist Candice Holdsworth. Hello, everybody.

Hope you're doing well. Thomas, Trump TV has just launched, has it? What's going on? Yeah, I've got my eyes on it right now. We're watching. Unfortunately, it just looks like

they're playing a replay of his speech at Mount Rushmore on the 250th anniversary. So it wasn't quite what we were all hoping for. I'm seeing a little bit of disappointment online. But it was just announced. Maybe they're working on it.

Maybe we're gonna get some sort of studio show. I don't know. There's a lot of potential here. Okay, Reem, any thoughts on Trump TV? I mean, what is this? Was this a project planned after they booted out

the aforementioned broadcasters, or was that in the pipeline? We've got no idea, although it sounds as though it might have been in the pipeline for quite a while. I mean, look, I hate, hate, hate the fact that there are journalists that have been pushed out

of the White House. I think it is absolutely outrageous. On Trump TV, I mean, why do we need another state-run media? It seems entirely unnecessary. What about Bev's argument there? Just read the journalist getting booted out,

saying, look, it's not a First Amendment right. It's a privilege being in the White House. It is, of course, a privilege being in the White House. It's not a First Amendment right being in somebody else's home, but this is about public office,

and this is about reporting, and Trump has selected journalists based on their opinions. That is not right, and quite frankly, I think we've got to be very clear about the fact that journalism and media is not necessarily

just about having journalists and having commentary that is talking about Trump in a flattering way. If Trump was really as big and strong as he says that he is, why is he so afraid of criticism? Candice, what do you make of Trump TV? Are you going to be tuning in every night?

Maybe. I mean, I think a lot of politicians now think that they can just go directly to the audience, and you see that so much. So many politicians recording cameras, recording on cameras and posting it online,

but I don't think you can replace journalists. I love the back and forth. You know, we're adversarial, we're questioning, we're critical. I think that's the beauty of our Western societies, that we have that sort of fierce, free discourse.

Yes. Sebastian, your thoughts on this? Hello, thank you for your company tonight, Sebastian. Good to see you. I've been unfaithful to you as well, I'm afraid. I've been tuning into a bit of Trump TV.

It seems to be all pre-recorded, which isn't very exciting. We'll see where it goes, but it doesn't seem like anything that is particularly going to move the needle in terms of coverage of the White House. It was a real shame to see those banned, and I was really pleased to see that many other outlets,

including those on the right, like Fox News, have stood by their journalistic principles and have not put up anybody.
