Quotes from Candice

  • “they're grasping what the problem is and actually the urgency of it and actually how the public see it, because that is first and foremost how the public see it as a security issue.”

Candice Holdsworth comments on Northern Ireland protests and government response, noting that the counter-terrorism czar's framing of immigration as a security issue signals the government understands public concern. She argues that suppressing political debate creates a dangerous pressure cooker effect and that legitimate governance requires dialogue channels reflecting democratic wishes.

Lots more to discuss on all of this. Candice, very, very interesting to see what some of the politicians have been saying in Westminster about what's happened in Northern Ireland. We knew from our reporter that there are further protests tonight. What is your sense of this and whether the government has a grip on it? Well, I find it interesting that the counter-terrorism czar,

Jonathan Hall, has come out and he's now said that we need to start treating immigration as a security issue. Yes. It tells me that they're grasping what the problem is and actually the urgency of it and actually how the public see it, because that is first and foremost how the public see it as a security issue.

I think that they know that they have to start moving towards the public on this and that, like you say, you can't suppress the debate. If you suppress the debate, actually that's when you create a pressure cooker. People need to feel like there are breathing holes, that there are things happening, that the people who govern over them, like I say,

are legitimate, that they're reflecting back at them the democratic wishes of the people.
