Quotes from Candice
“You create the conditions for ordinary people to get going.”
Candice Holdsworth argues that the UK faces a structural economic crisis characterized by stagnation, over-taxation, and over-regulation that drives talent and businesses to the US. She criticizes the Labour government's assumption that increased state spending generates growth, contending instead that private sector conditions must be improved. While supporting taxation for public services, she insists taxpayer money must be spent efficiently rather than wasted on foreign aid and benefits.

And the 400,000 the MPs have taken already, well of course they would, you know, it's corrupt. The government is absolutely corrupt. Just look at the Cabinet and work out who's had a few backhanders. All dodgy as hell. And that's the polite way of saying it. Well, Boz, I think a lot of people would agree with you on that. Lots of people getting in touch and referencing the same thing. The benefits bill needs to be cut, foreign aid needs to be cut, net zero needs to be scrapped. We need to get a handle on our public service
spending. Cliff, just messaging this morning, morning Charlie and Candice, is it Burnham or is it really Miliband who seeks to increase foreign aid? Every time Miliband opens his mouth it costs us money. He was the same when in charge of net zero. He's addicted to spending and I think that's the problem. For all of the good start that Andy Burnham seems to have made as a communicator, much better than Keir Starmer, I think we've got to give him credit for that. It's not lost on the public that despite the maybe smooth Manchesterism,
you know, cool, nice guy approach that he seems to be taking to Number 10, spending is up. You know, the commitments that he's making that have been wheeled out, yes it might help people a little bit in their lives, but you know, he's avoided parliamentary scrutiny, hasn't faced the House of Commons yet, we've got a budget coming in the autumn and we're hearing these stories about increases in spending in foreign aid. I mean, you know, we are spending much more than we've got coming into the country. Absolutely. Look, he needs to get
real. I mean, it's not just about style. I really think he's misread that. Yes, he seems a more affable type person, but the fact of the matter is we haven't, the past 10 years haven't taken out so many sitting British Prime Ministers because of their lack of style. There are deep structural problems in this country that keep coming up time and time again, and unless you're willing to tackle them, it's going to destroy you too. One of our huge problems is growth, and one of the big drags on growth is things like people
pay too much in tax so they don't spend on other things. There's over-regulation so people can't access capital to start businesses, for instance. I mean, the divergence between Britain and America since the 2008 crisis is massive. When we were on par, there's no reason for us to be struggling the way we are. Most of it is very, very poor policies. Yes, you're absolutely right. Now, the US, which you mentioned very briefly, I know about this because we did a little conversation about it the other day, I think has now reached about £40 trillion
of debt. However, you can accumulate a bit of debt as a country if, and you can borrow more money, and you can spend if it's on projects that are going to get you a return, but if there is the growth, and the thing about the US is that they still continue to grow. So, yes, you can accumulate a bit of debt because you know in the long term you're going to be able to grow to pay off whatever it is that you've borrowed, those infrastructure projects that get you that return in the long term, and then you pay down your deficit and
then ultimately the debt. But we don't have growth in the UK. That's the problem. That's the doom loop that we're in. More taxes, more spending, more borrowing, more debt that then just gets laid on to the next generation, and it might be your kids that end up paying that bill. 100%. It's frustrating because we have the human capital. We have some of the best universities in the world. We have some of the brightest entrepreneurs, but guess where they go when they want to take their business to the next level? They go to the
US so that they can access more capital. This is a tragedy. This should not be happening to us. And like I said, it is well recognised that it was sort of an overreaction in this country to the 2008 financial crisis, and people just haven't been able to get money to do things and to grow things. And of course, Labour has, in my opinion, just the most risk averse instincts when it comes to this. I mean, they think that everything comes from the state. And so far, everything that I've heard from Andy Burnham and John Healy, they
think that just by spending more, they can get growth going. No, no, no. You create the conditions for ordinary people to get going. I truly believe that. Yeah. It's businesses and individuals that create growth, not governments. Very quickly, before we go to a break, we've got Dean who's been in touch. He says, morning, Charlene Candice. Foreign aid and net zero should be scrapped forever. And by the way, I see all taxation as theft. I wouldn't go as far to say it was theft, because I still think that
we in the UK believe that taxes that are raised should be going on public services, things that we all use at a time of need, particularly the NHS. And I don't think anybody begrudges someone who does end up on benefits, somebody that does need that little security blanket for a short period of time just to get them through a difficult patch. I think we might all know someone that's been in that situation. So I don't begrudge paying tax, but I want that tax to be spent effectively. I want every penny of taxpayers' hard-earned pounds
going into public services that are efficient, that are firing on all cylinders, that are delivering in the way that they are intended. But let me know what you think. 0344 499 1000 or text the word TALK to 87222. We're asking the question this morning, what would you do if you were Chancellor? Are you happy to pay more money on foreign aid? Are you happy for the benefits bill to keep ballooning? Are you happy for a freebie farce of migrants that come into the country to get trips and days out at a fraction of the cost that it
would cost you as a hard-working taxpayer? 0344 499 1000. This is Charlie Rowley at TALK, the home of common sense. I'll be back with Candice after this break.
